History Of Prague Zoo

History Of Prague Zoo

Prague Zoo has a long history that dates back to the year 1881. Count Sweerts-Sporck published an open letter, during the wedding of Crown Prince Rudolph and Princess Stephanie of Belgium, for the establishment of a zoological park in Prague. A committee for the same was introduced in 1891 and for a long time, there were multiple discussions held for building the zoo. Finally, in 1922, a farm tycoon decided to donate a piece of land in Troja, Prague on the condition that it will be used to build a zoo.

The following years were dedicated to the planning and designing of the zoo. On September 28, 1931, the zoo opened its gates to the public for visiting. Subsequently, animals were brought into the zoo for preservation and exhibitions. The zoo went on to introduce and breed a wide variety of animals including seals, giraffes, otters, and Komodo dragons, among others.
